WHAT IS YILMEH ACADEMY
Yilmeh Academy embodies the communal ethos of Ubuntu, where students work together to support each other's learning and serve themselves and their community with respect and value for each other's contributions. Through a transdisciplinary learning approach, children acquire critical thinking, effective social communication, research prowess, and self-management skills, empowering them to solve community issues and positively contribute to their surroundings.
Waa Makor is a Liberian-born educator who obtained her Education in the US. She has taught in the Los Angeles School District (LAUSD) since 1998 and briefly taught in the Santa Monica School District. In addition to teaching, she has worked with neglected children within the legal system through the Children Institute International, awaiting placement with foster parents or adoption.
Since she was a young girl, she has had a passion for teaching, which led her to take action in Liberia after the country's shift towards peace with the election of a female president. Never one to wait for change, she invested in 22 acres of land in Liberia, Monrovia, and started to establish a learning space for war-affected children. However, faced with land grabs and illegal sales, she relocated the school to a village in Bong County, where the school lives today.
